studio bij ’t vuur

Tessa — reformer pilates in Antwerp.

I teach reformer pilates to women in Antwerp. Never more than two people per session, in a private studio in Zurenborg.

How I ended up here.

I grew up in the Austrian Alps and lived there until I was twenty-four. I have been in Belgium for ten years now, four of them in Antwerp. Before pilates I worked in sales and marketing, with a master’s in management behind me.

I have done pilates for years, and movement has always been the thread running through my life. At a certain point my job stopped giving me what I was looking for: I wanted to mean something for people’s wellbeing, and for women in particular. What struck me was how little there is for women that looks at more than the workout alone. As if a body only needs to be trained, and not also carried through a pregnancy, a recovery or a transition. That is where Studio Bij ’t Vuur came from: a small studio next to the Groenkwartier in Antwerp. The name is my surname — Bij ’t Vuur, ‘by the fire’ — and it happens to say exactly what I want here: warmth, calm, and something that keeps burning.

Training.

What sits behind the guidance.

Polestar Pilates, comprehensive

The full training, more than 400 hours. Polestar works from movement science and rehabilitation, not from a fixed series of classes.

Pre- and postnatal pilates

A separate certification for guidance during pregnancy and the recovery after birth. I am a mother myself, so I know that stage from the inside too.

Health coach, IIN

Training as a health coach. Movement never stands apart from sleep, stress and food, and I bring that into how we work.

Why never more than two.

The studio has two reformers, and that is where it stops. In a group you adjust to everyone else’s pace and I cannot see what is happening in your body. With two people at most I can watch, correct and adapt while you move. That is the whole idea.

Ready to start?

Book your first session. It starts with a short intake: we look at how you move, where you are coming from and what you are after, and then we get straight to work on the reformer.
